EACH PROGRAM IS A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE

Why Learn Portuguese

Portuguese is the sixth most spoken language in the world. After English and Spanish, it is the third most spoken European language, and spoken on four different continents. Brazil is the fifth most populous country and the sixth largest economy in the world. Portuguese, along with Spanish, is the fastest growing language of Europe, and, according to UNESCO, it is the language with the highest growth potential as an international communication tool in Southern Africa and South America.

FACULTY-LED EDUCATION PROGRAMS

At ICR Brasil learning Portuguese goes far beyond the classroom. Our students experience life in another culture, where they incorporate language learning in every aspect of their lives. ICR Brasil offers a variety of study-abroad programs and Portuguese courses to foreigners that can be tailored from survival Portuguese to complex studies in language, and literature, always enriched by local Brazilian culture.

LANGUAGE AND CULTURE PROGRAM

More than just Portuguese. Understand the Brazilian culture.

PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE COURSE:

Our Portuguese classes are taught by well-trained experienced teachers. Students can develop their language skills while being fully immersed in cultural experiences. ICR Portuguese courses are designed according to the needs of each program and institution and they can be basically divided into two types:

Academic Portuguese Course

Students will learn how to use the language in different academic and routine situations through a selective review of grammar, vocabulary-building exercises, readings and discussion of contemporary topics. It is recommended for students who wish to attend courses at a Brazilian University and to receive credit hours if required by their home university.

Survival Portuguese Course

Students will learn how to use basic language skills in everyday situations. Our aim is to help them improve fundamental communication skills by tackling essential structures and relevant vocabulary. Survival Portuguese is often paired with cultural programs where language is not the focus.

BRAZILIAN CULTURE COURSE:

Savor the food, art, history, politics, and traditions of our culture.

Through a series of lectures (in Portuguese or English) by prominent local citizens and scholars, students will learn about Brazilian history, music, political and socio-economic related issues. Field trips and tours are integral to the course. Students can visit museums, NGOs, go sightseeing, and visit famous Bahian historical towns and tourist destinations. Our staff can also help students find ways to pursue their interests, be it Capoeira, Afro-Brazilian dance, Brazilian music, percussion, Candomblé religion or other areas of interest.

WINTER AND SPRING BREAK PROGRAMS

Be fearless and spend your break beyond your borders.

EDUCATION IN BRAZIL

Students will gain a better understanding of the role of higher education in Brazil and the educational needs of low-income and first generation students, particularly Afro-Brazilians. Students will also acquire a greater understanding of how race, socioeconomic status, and gender impact educational and social opportunities for Brazilian youth.

BRAZILIAN MUSIC

This program will introduce students to the music, culture, and educational systems of Brazil. Students participate in cultural and educational activities, music presentations, percussion and dance workshops. No previous music or language experience is required.

DANCING IN BRAZIL

Students will be introduced to the richness of Brazilian dance, exploring the power of dance and performance with a particular focus on Afro-Brazilian dances, songs, and rhythms for the Orixás and the Candomblé tradition, as well as the practice of Capoeira. Our aim is to provide students with the chance to perform and study with Brazilian dance masters and engage in cultural exchanges with Brazilian dancers.

CUSTOMIZED PROGRAMS

We make it possible for you to create the perfect customized study abroad program for your students.

Our courses can be designed or adapted to meet the specific needs of any given academic program. ICR Brasil has been working with institutions such as Ohio State University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Kansas, University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Georgia State University to create customized programs in different areas, such as Collective Health, Architecture and Engineering, Globalization and Afro-Brazilian culture, as well as Cross Cultural Psychology, among others.

SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Get involved in a local community, and do something fun and exciting!

When students leave the classroom to volunteer, they gain a well-rounded education. Beyond the classroom walls, they’ll practice the language, find different perspectives, and be inspired to learn about new ways of thinking. Volunteering abroad is a decision that will have an impact on the rest of their lives. When students volunteer through ICR Brasil, our team will ensure that they are matched to an NGO or community which will allow them to make a valuable contribution to the host community.
